Rapid emergency aid in Myanmar

Strong earthquake shakes Myanmar

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 caused severe devastation in Myanmar and Thailand on March 28.

The epicenter was in central Myanmar, near the city of Mandalay, but the tremors were clearly felt as far away as Yangon – our support center was also affected.

A few days after the devastating quake, the full extent of the disaster in Myanmar is becoming apparent. Our local SONNE Social Organisation team was active just a few hours after the quake. After a long journey, they reached one of the worst-affected areas around Inle Lake two days after the disaster. Right where the epicentre was, our courageous SONNE employees started supporting those affected.

Our fantastic SONNE team is distributing urgently needed food and clean drinking water and providing unbureaucratic emergency aid to the people affected.

Aid and solidarity for Myanmar

Even before the earthquake, the situation in Myanmar was very serious: political instability, an ailing healthcare system and exploding food prices.

SONNE-International has been working in Myanmar without interruption since 2008 – despite the pandemic, despite the civil war, despite all the adversity. While many organisations have withdrawn, we remain on the ground – at the side of the people who need our help.

As the only Austrian aid organisation with local registration (via our subsidiary SONNE Social Organisation), we have a strong, experienced team and, in Jochen Meissner, an Austrian project coordinator directly on the ground.

In recent years, our team has proven itself time and again as a reliable problem solver – whether in natural disasters, emergency medical aid or the daily support of children in slums and refugee camps.

Especially now – after the severe earthquake – it is once again clear how important long-term presence and genuine partnership at eye level are.

Your donation is critical to this mission.

Right now, our primary focus is assisting slum dwellers in Yangon by distributing food aid packages. In these challenging times, providing access to basic necessities like food and free medical treatment is one of the most immediate ways to offer relief.

How Will Your Donation Be Used?

Thousands of children in Myanmar die every year from treatable diseases because their families cannot afford medical care, costly treatments, or hospital stays. With the current food crisis, many more children face the risk of malnutrition.

One of our top priorities is providing food aid to slum residents in Yangon, offering them the vital support they need. In medical emergencies, we also provide funding for surgeries and long-term treatments without unnecessary delays. To continue delivering rapid and unbureaucratic aid, we rely on your support!

The SONNE-Emergency Relief Fund

Your donation enables us to provide fast, effective and hassle-free aid! Together with SONNE Ambassador Jochen Meissner, our local team in Myanmar ensures the efficient distribution of essential aid packages to people in need. We also organise medical treatment for slum communities, orphanages and IDP camps through our Mobile Health Camp, reaching many who have no access to proper healthcare.

Help us continue making a difference!

Donate today to our emergency fund and show the people of Myanmar that they are not forgotten in these dark hours. Your contribution stands as a symbol of solidarity, bringing hope to those who need it most. Jochen and our team in Myanmar will personally ensure your donation reaches those in need as swiftly as possible.
