Cycling Together for a Good Cause, a 1-month event for children in Malawi

The SONNE Bike Challenge isn’t a competition—it’s a 30-day community cycling event. It doesn’t matter if you bike to work every day or are training for a race: there’s no minimum distance requirement and no goal you can miss. There’s just this one month during which every kilometer you bike can make a huge difference.

With your initial donation of €33, you can provide a child with a school spot for an entire semester. And every kilometer you cycle makes an even bigger difference. That’s because our sponsors convert every kilometer you ride into donations, ensuring that children in Malawi have access to school education and physical education.

In 2025, 465 cyclists participated, collectively covering 151,240 km and raising €90,000 for our village schools in Bangladesh. What can we achieve together this year—for children in Malawi.

Sign up online for the SONNE Cycling Challenge, pay the €33 entry fee – and you’re all set. Then it’s time to hop on your bike and go! The challenge runs from June 1 to 30. You cycle whenever and wherever you want—on your way to work, in your free time, or during training. There’s no minimum distance: You decide the pace, route, and distance, whether alone or as part of a team. You report your kilometers to us weekly so they can be included in the overall standings. Once a week, we’ll also publish an interim ranking of the top 3 women and top 3 men. And because people matter more than kilometers in the Bike Challenge: Get your crew involved! Motivate colleagues, family, and friends to join in. Whoever recruits the most participants becomes the “Community Star.”

You cycle—and help provide children with an education in Malawi

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. Many families have to get by on less than a dollar a day. In this reality, schooling is often not a given, but a luxury that many cannot afford. Girls are particularly at risk: dropping out of school, child marriage, violence, and harassment rob them of their safety and future opportunities. At the same time, rural areas often lack sports fields, materials, and trained staff. When protection and prospects are lacking, education becomes fragile.

We’re cycling to make a difference!

Children have the right to grow up healthy and go to school. SONNE-International has been active in Malawi since 2023. Together with our local partner organization SAPOF, we are establishing sustainable structures at two rural elementary schools to strengthen education and protection.

This includes new sports fields, regular physical education classes, self-defense courses for girls, and teacher training. For children from families living in extreme poverty, we also cover school fees, provide school supplies, and supply school uniforms.

Because we are convinced that attending school should not be a matter of money. Our goal is to give even more children this opportunity.

That’s exactly why we’re collecting 2,026 kilometers and donations through the SONNE Bike Challenge. Challenge accepted?

With the funds raised by the 2026 Bike Challenge, we aim to provide the following:

School fees and educational support for over 350 children from households living in extreme poverty —weekly self-defense classes for over 200 girls.

Daily physical education classes for over 1,500 schoolchildren.

What your €33 entry fee accomplishes

With your €33 entry donation, you enable a child in Malawi to attend school for one semester, including daily physical education. That’s six months of learning, care, and protection—and the chance to take a different path than the one into poverty that many children are born into.
