Famine Prevention by Re-establishing Livestock

Ethiopia-Afar

Project start date:

 December 2008

Duration:

6 months

Number of beneficiaries:

150 families (originally 350 families*)

Local partners

APDA (Afar Pastoralist Development Association)

Aim:

to improve the food situation by re-establishing the population of goat

*Due to an unexpected lack of resources the project had to be stopped prematurely. Therefore only 150 families (instead of 350, as planned originally) could be supplied with goats (April 2009).

Due to the complete absence of rain in parts of the Afar Region between September 2007 and September 2008 and the ensuing catastrophic drought, the people suffered from hunger and malnutrition. Even today, nomadism and the breeding of goats and camels continue to represent the economic foundation of life for the Afar people. The prolonged droughts caused a significant portion of the livestock to perish, thus removing the Afar’s means of existence.

In the affected areas about 80% of the population suffered from malnutrition. By the end of October 2008, altogether 1200 people (85% of them children below the age of five) had been treated for acute malnutrition by our partner organization. Officially 150 hunger victims have been registered since June 2008, but the estimated number of unreported deaths is much higher.

The project was started in December 2008. Altogether 150 families that were hit particularly hard by the drought were supplied with ten goats each (9 female, one male). These animals should represent the basis for new flocks. The 1500 goats needed for this project were bought locally from breeders living outside the drought areas and transported by lorry into the project area.
