Bangladesh is the world's most densely populated state and one of the poorest countries on earth. Approximately 160 million people live in an area of not quite twice the size of Austria. Apart from the Bengali majority (more than 98%) that is predominantly Muslim (more than 90%), Bangladesh is also home to several minority groups, who have a different cultural and religious identity. These minorities often live on the brink of society. Due to their cultural background they have extremely limited access to education (literacy rate below 18%) as well as to health care and infrastructure. One of these groups is the Garo nation, who live in the north of Bangladesh in the district of Sherpur near the border to India. In 5 villages of this region SONNE-International has developed a school project in close cooperation with the local population.

September 2010 ongoing project
Five teachers have been employed to provide basic education for approximately 150 children under the age of ten. Each of the five schools has latrines for the pupils and access to clean water. A particularly important aspect in the framework of education is information about disease prevention and hygiene. |
Where education has started, further steps must follow.
Our long-term objectives for this project region:
- to guarantee instruction on a permanent level (in close cooperation with the local authorities)
- to improve access to clean drinking water and sanitation (latrines)
- to provide mobile medical care for the villagers
- to develop income-creating projects for the villagers (training, microcredits etc.)

We would like to express our special thanks to the Yoga studio YUNA -YOGA in Graz, Austria, for taking on the sponsorship of this project.
